Cephalexin Side Effects DiarrheaCephalexin is an anti-biotic which is used to treat diseases like, otitis media, pharyngitis and pneumonia. It is also used to treat skin infections, respiratory infections, bone infections, ear infections and urinary tract infections caused by bacteria. It is used to prevent bacterial endocarditis.

Cephalexin in addition to having one of the side effects as diarrhea has several other side effects.

Common and Rare Cephalexin Side Effects Diarrhea

• Nausea may be caused.

• An individual taking it may vomit.

• Pain in the abdomen may be caused.

• Rashes may develop.

• Pain in the joints can be caused.

• Confusion may be caused.

• Sore throat is also one of the side effects.

• An individual taking it may show agitated behavior.

• Urticaria, Stevens-Johnsons syndrome and angiodema may be caused as an allergic reaction to it. One may face trouble in breathing also.

• Dry mouth can be caused.

• An individual may feel tired and weak
Diarrhea and cephalexin

Diarrhea is a disorder in which an individual passes loose stools multiple times a day. It may cause dehydration. Cephalexin has one of the side effects as diarrhea.

In our intestine there are some healthy bacteria which help in digestion. These also keep the bacteria harmful to our body under control. An antibiotic along with destroying the disease causing bacteria, also destroy the healthy bacteria. Hence, the healthy bacteria which regulate the growth of unhealthy bacteria are decreased. This may lead to an unrestricted growth of the unhealthy bacteria which may cause diarrhea.

Diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile colitis may also occur as a side effect of taking cephalexin. The Clostridium difficile bacterium may grow excessively, when the healthy bacteria in the intestine are destroyed by the anti-biotic. Clostridium difficile bacterium may cause diarrhea.

If cephalexin side effects diarrhea occurs, then it is important to drink plenty of water as diarrhea increases the risk of dehydration. Avoid eating food rich in fats. Oral Rehydration Solution should be taken to maintain the hydration levels of the body.

If the situation worsens then the doctor should be consulted without making any delay. Take the medicine according to the dose prescribed by the doctor. If you take an overdose of it, then contact your doctor as an overdose may produce some serious side effects and may prove dangerous.
